Cleanup in Vicksburg almost complete after mudslides

VICKSBURG- Over the weekend severe weather rolled through the state, some areas were affected worse than others. In Vicksburg, down trees, power lines, and mudslides plagued the community.

Most of the damage was from the fallen trees, however there were reports of extreme mudslides in the Kings area.

“Several people were out of power, we just got power back to our industrial park about 1:30 a.m. this morning,” said Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs.

Mudslides are no surprise to the Vicksburg area. Mayor Flaggs said it is not uncommon for heavy rain to cause them. So far officials have been able to move most of the mud that was displaced due to the rain.

“I think everything is about 90 percent back to normal,” said Mayor Flaggs.

Luckily there were no deaths or injuries due to the weather and water remained safe for consumption.

He said moving forward they have requested money from their Congressional Delegation to appropriate funds in the next cycle to go to reinforcing the city against these mudslides.

“We’ve got to have drainage because it’s a problem every time it rains,” said Mayor Flaggs.
