Normal fantasy football leagues have come to an end and what a great season it was. We hope that you did well in your league, or leagues, but if you’re still looking for some fantasy football action while the playoffs go on, and you’re looking for some help then look no further because the Bruno Boys will be here throughout the postseason. As such we’ll be releasing our normal weekly position rankings to help you best decide which players to go with in our Fantasy Football Playoff Challenge. To see where this round’s running backs rank continue reading the Super Bowl Round edition of the Bruno Boys Weekly Running Back Rankings.

1. Joseph Addai (Indianapolis Colts) vs. New Orleans

Joseph Addai bounced back from a sub-par 2008 season and finished 2009 with 828 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns. It looked like there was a possibility he could lose his starting spot in the Colts’ backfield to rookie Donald Brown, but heading into these playoffs he was the team’s clear-cut No. 1 rushing option. As many before him have, Addai struggled in the Divisional round of the playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens. He finished the game with 11 carries for 23 yards. Despite suffering a shoulder injury and leaving the game in the first quarter against the New York Jets in the AFC Championship game, he returned to the lineup in the second quarter and finished with 80 rushing yards on 16 carries. He should be in line for very solid numbers in the Super Bowl against a New Orleans Saints defense that gave up 122 rushing yards and three touchdowns to Adrian Peterson in the NFC Championship game.
Point Projection: 14 points

2. Pierre Thomas (New Orleans Saints) vs. Indianapolis

It was a bit of a roller coaster season for Pierre Thomas in 2009. The year started with a lot of promise based off of a strong finish in 2008. Unfortunately he missed the better part of the first two games with a knee injury, which allowed his backup Mike Bell to make a bit of a name for himself. Thomas showed signs of why he was drafted as a RB2 by many fantasy football owners in drafts last summer, but despite having some very good games this season; he never put together more than two games in row with double digit fantasy points. He was often lost in the shuffle in the Saints high-powered offensive attack. He only recorded 15 or more carries in a game twice all year, but he did finish the season with 1,095 total yards and eight touchdowns. Thomas had a solid outing in the NFC Championship game against a very good Minnesota Vikings defense, as he finished the game with two total touchdowns. He will once again share touches with Reggie Bush and possibly even Mike Bell, but he should be the leading rusher for New Orleans as they appear in their first ever Super Bowl.
Point Projection: 12 points

3. Reggie Bush (New Orleans Saints) vs. Indianapolis

Reggie Bush is undoubtedly the most recognizable and most publicized of all the running backs that will appear in Super Bowl XLIV. He is a Heisman Trophy winner and his relationship with girlfriend Kim Kardashian is often headline news, but this hasn’t been a great season for Bush. He was limited to 14 games during the regular season and finished the year with just 390 rushing yards. Despite the low rushing totals, he is still a very dynamic running back who can make a big play any time he touches the ball. Not only did he average 5.6 yards per carry, he added 47 receptions for 335 yards with eight total touchdowns. He has also been very effective in the Saints’ two playoff games with a touchdown rushing, receiving and in the return game. Bush will not lead the Saints in carries in this game, but he will electrify the crowd every time he touches the ball. Expect low yardage totals from Bush against the Indianapolis Colts, but he has had a knack for finding the end zone in these playoffs and very well could do so once again this week.
Point Projection: 8 points

4. Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) vs. New Orleans

Despite high expectations coming into the year, Donald Brown’s rookie season didn’t amount too much. He was slowed by injuries and a rejuvenated Joseph Addai. He finished the season with 78 carries for 281 yards and three touchdowns. He showed flashes of a very solid future at running back in the NFL, but it became obvious throughout the year that Peyton Manning and the Colts’ coaching staff had much more faith in the veteran Addai. Expect to see Brown get a handful of carries against the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl, but don’t expect much more than the six carries he had in the AFC Championship game. He will likely be a very good NFL running back one day, just not this week.
Point Projection: 2 points

5. Mike Bell (New Orleans Saints) vs. Indianapolis

When the 2009 NFL season started, Mike Bell was a virtual unknown in the fantasy football world. Your most knowledgeable football fans remembered him as a member of the Denver Broncos, but with the exception of a decent 2006 season he has been a fantasy non-factor. With Pierre Thomas being injured during the first two weeks of the season Bell took advantage of extended playing time and posted 26 total fantasy points. The rest of his season was very sporadic and inconsistent, but he did finish the year with 172 carries for 654 yards and five touchdowns. As for the playoffs he has been pretty much non-existent. He had just six carries for 11 yards in the Divisional round against the Arizona Cardinals and he didn’t even touch the ball against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship. Don’t expect Bell to play an important role this week in the Super Bowl, in what is the biggest game in New Orleans franchise history.
