Fantasy Football Super Bowl: Starts / Sits

The Super Bowl! Plain and simple, the best game of the year. Football is the only sport that decides its champion in one game, which inevitably makes it the most watched, most exciting game of the year.

We are fortunate enough to see two amazingly efficient and high-powered offenses go at it for 60 minutes this coming Sunday. While many are just watching the game for the commercials, you out there in Bruno Boys Nation are all hoping a few tips can win you some pride (and perhaps money) in your Playoff Challenges.

QUARTERBACKS

Drew Brees vs. Peyton Manning

The Indianapolis Colts are favored in this game, but it doesn’t mean that Peyton Manning is going to have the better fantasy match-up. It seems like both quarterbacks are capable of posting 20+ point games, but I’m giving the slight nod to Drew Brees with around the same numbers, but one less turnover.

Brees Projection: 312 yards, 3 TDs

RUNNING BACKS

Reggie Bush vs. Pierre Thomas vs. Joseph Addai

Out of this bunch, Reggie Bush is the least reliable fantasy option. He has been steady in the playoffs, but Pierre Thomas will definitely see more touches. With Bush and Thomas splitting the share (Thomas 60%, Bush 40%), it leaves the door open for Colts’ RB Joseph Addai to muster up roughly 15 fantasy points, and the best game out of the bunch.

Addai Projection: 95 total yards, 1 TD

WIDE RECEIVERS

Marques Colston vs. Reggie Wayne

Colston has a tendency to hide in big contests. He is a big, physical target who can dominate smaller cornerbacks (exactly what the Colts have). However, Reggie Wayne has proven that he can be successful with or without wide receivers Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie, and he should be the better of the two this weekend.

Wayne Projection: 78 yards, 1 TD

Devery Henderson vs. Robert Meachem vs. Pierre Garcon vs. Austin Collie

All four of these targets are down field threats that are capable of busting off long TD plays. The Saints’ wide receivers have more experience, and Brees is great at spreading the ball around (as is Peyton Manning). Meachem has been unreliable this postseason, while Henderson has been quite valuable. Garcon and Collie have both been rock solid, especially in the match-up against the New York Jets last weekend (274 yards, 2 TDs). Henderson and Garcon should be the best two of the bunch, however.

Henderson Projection: 62 yards, 1 TD
Garcon Projection: 113 yards

TIGHT ENDS

Jeremy Shockey vs. Dallas Clark

Actually, the Saints and Colts were two of the best four teams against the tight end position in the 2009 season. The Colts allowed 3.1 points per game to tight ends, while the Saints allowed 4.7. Dallas Clark is more talented, more reliable, and will be a better producer in the Super Bowl.

Clark Projection: 60 yards, 1 TD

KICKERS

Garrett Hartley vs. Matt Stover

Hartley has a bigger leg, but he is also 19 years younger, so give Stover a break. This game will probably be decided by 3 points (or at least the Super Bowl audience is hoping) and with the Colts winning, you gotta give the edge to Stover.

Stover Projection: 2/3 FG, 4/4 XP

DEFENSES

New Orleans D/ST vs. Indianapolis Colts D/ST

While neither is a good option for obvious reasons, with Dwight Freeney possibly out, the Saints have a better shot at posting a few more fantasy points. The Colts pass rush may be light, and they don’t do a great job at forcing turnovers (while the Saints do…as evidenced by the 5 turnovers against the Vikings). Don’t expect much, but the Saints should put up 1-2 more fantasy points.

New Orleans D/ST Projection: 34 PA, 1 sack, 1 FF, 1 INT
