Consisting of 10 members of the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Staff, along with guest columnist’s from Fighting Chance Fantasy and The IDP Guru, our first of many Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft was a 16-round affair based on a standard scoring league (Pass TDs – 4 points, All Other TDs – 6 points, 25 Yards Passing – 1 point, 10 Yards Rushing/Receiving – 1 point). Outside of having to field a starting line-up occupied by 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 D, owners were free to compile their rosters any way in which they pleased.

All commentary after each pick is provided by the Bruno Boys staff member who made that pick. The draft started on February 15, 2010 and we will report round-by-round updates as they are available. Make sure to check back for more commentary on our Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft.

FEBRUARY MOCK DRAFT ROUND 11 RESULTS

11.01: Bruno Boys Matt – Tashard Choice (Dal) — This pick is a speculative one. It is extremely unlikely that Barber, Jones, and Choice are all back in Dallas next season, despite what team officials say. Dallas has other needs and quite a few teams would be interested in Choice. If he gets dealt, as I think he will, this pick could pay huge dividends. Being a RB4, I can afford to take that risk here.

11.02: Bruno Boys Larry – Heath Miller (Pit) — After missing out on the elite tight ends earlier in this draft, I was able to stock up on some other positions and still land a top-ten fantasy tight end from 2009. Heath Miller was a great outlet for Ben Roethlisberger as they connected for 76 receptions last season. Miller fell just shy of 800 yards receiving and had six touchdowns, and I am very happy to land a solid TE1 in the 11th round.

11.03: Bruno Boys Whooley – Willis McGahee (Bal) — I’m no fool. I know that the Ravens’ backfield is now Ray Rice’s domain, but Willis McGahee is still part of the picture, especially when they get down near the goal-line. His 12 TDs in 2009 are enough to warrant a late round pick in any fantasy draft in 2010.

11.04: Bruno Boys Hallam – Bernard Berrian (Min) – I am banking that Brett Favre will be back in 2010, and at this point, to get a receiver on one of the better offenses from 2009 isn’t bad. Berrian had a pretty consistent season of just a line of average games. If Berrian can get 6 or 7 touchdowns in 2010, he will be a good option as my fourth receiver.

11.05: Bruno Boys Jacob – Dez Bryant (FA) — In dire need of a WR4, I’ll take a shot on the talented WR from Oklahoma State. As of today, it looks like Bryant will fall to the Broncos at #11, where they will immediately plug him into the WR2 role behind Eddie Royal. Brandon Marshall is all but gone, and while Eddie Royal (who was a great pick by Bruno Boys Matt) is a great underneath guy, Bryant is talented enough to step into Marshall’s role as the man who stretches the field and thrive from Day One.

11.06: Bruno Boys Jimbo – David Garrard (Jax) — One of the more underrated QBs in fantasy football right now, it’s easy to overlook David Garrard, but he does have some impressive weapons to work with. He has an emerging star in Mike Sims-Walker, and don’t forget who he frequently dumps the ball off to in the backfield, Maurice Jones-Drew, who gains a lot of his yards/touchdowns by catching dump-off passes and screen passes. I’ll take him as my backup QB this late in the draft.

11.07: Bruno Boys Allie – Donald Brown (Ind) — Like many fantasy football owners, I waited for Brown to eventually take the starting job from Addai last season, and we know how that turned out. Brown struggled to stay healthy, while Addai got the touches and TDs. Brown possesses the speed and athleticism to be a big play threat and hopefully he’ll use the off-season to improve his understanding of the offense and develop his skills. Although Addai is the presumptive starter, the Colts drafted Brown as their back of the future, and I expect we’ll see more of him in his second season. As my No. 5 RB, Brown adds depth to my bench and is a potential sleeper in the 11th round. Fingers crossed! 

11.08: Bruno Boys Cory – San Francisco 49ers D/ST (SF) — With my starters set aside from my kicker, I had the ability to go in a lot of different directions with this pick. Ultimately, I decided to select the San Francisco 49ers defense because I felt I would be able to get what I wanted at wide receiver and running back later. Having the D/STs from the Jets and 49ers now gives me two of the top five defenses from 2009, which only strengthens my team and gives me some trade potential as well.

11.09: Bruno Boys Kyle – Green Bay Packers D/ST (GB) — I’m somewhat surprised that the Packers weren’t among the earlier defense picks considering they were the No. 6 D/ST in scoring last season. They play in a division that is not filled with powerhouse offenses, and that will be especially true if Brett Favre doesn’t return to Minnesota. The Pack gave up an average of 18.6 points per game last season, but if you take away the two games they played against the Vikings, they only allowed 16.4.

11.10: Bruno Boys IDP Guru – Baltimore Ravens D/ST (Bal) — I’m jumping on the Team Defense bandwagon here. The Ravens finished 3rd best in overall yardage allowed and seem to consistently be one of the top defenses in the league from year-to-year.

11.11: Bruno Boys Greg – Mohamed Massaquoi (Cle) — I know Cavigs is going back to back wide receiver here, so I am going to grab one before he gets a chance. I’m not a fan of drafting anyone from Cleveland, but Massaquoi showed flashes of being a number one wideout in 2009. If he can catch the football (he had a lot of drops), he will be a solid guy for me here. Plus with too many other holes, it is doubtful the Browns get a wide receiver who will steal a ton of looks in 2010.

11.12: Bruno Boys Cavigs – Donnie Avery (StL) — In Avery I am getting a young and talented wide receiver that has not even begun to scratch the surface of his potential. His 47 receptions and 589 receiving yards were far from ideal however, Avery had five receiving touchdowns in an offense that threw 12 passing TDs in 16 games. With the Rams expected to address their quarterback issues through the draft or by trade it should only help Avery mature as a player. This pick comes with some risk, as St. Louis has many holes on offense, but I feel the potential reward outweighed that risk.

Round 11 Commentary from Bruno Boys Whooley: As we witnessed earlier in this draft, the initial run on defenses occurred in Round 8 with three teams nabbing their units (the Jets, Steelers, and Eagles) that go-round. Well, Round 11 brings us our second run on the defensive units as the Niners, Packers, and Ravens all come off the board (Interestingly enough, Bruno Boys Cory was involved in each run). This, though, is why I never really like to take a defense prior to the double digit rounds.

The drop off from the three units taken in Round 8 to those taken here is minimal. Heck, the 49ers were the unit that topped all defenses in fantasy points last season. Meanwhile, the drop off in value among position players is much greater during the three-round span. I mean, LT was still around come Round 9 of this draft. Yes, he’s well past his prime and looking for work, but you have to figure his potential value is leaps and bounds ahead of the likes of Mohamed Massaquoi and Donnie Avery.

One other trend I’d like to note here has to do with our experts’ commentary. You’ll notice that while the talent has thinned, our experts have found at least one positive quality to focus on for each of their picks. If you can find a shimmer hope with regards to the depth you’re adding at this point of your fantasy draft, trust your gut and grab onto it. Give that player a roster spot. Come Round 11, there are no such things as busts, but you definitely can find a diamond in the rough.

With the 2010 NFL Draft a month and a half away, mock drafts are plentiful. In fact, there are already 139 mock drafts published for the big day. If you took a minute to scan through a few of those drafts, you probably noticed that there are as many as six or seven players mentioned that might go to your favorite team come April. Obviously, only one (or maybe none) will end up being on the team you root for, but part of what makes the 2010 NFL Draft so interesting is the different possibilities that can change your favorite team’s future.

In this article, we’ll break down the possibilities that lay ahead for the Buffalo Bills. With that said, let’s get to it.

Buffalo Bills

With the ninth pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select…

We know that all these mock draft picks are just guesses at this point; however, the Buffalo Bills are in such a dilemma as to who will be available at their pick in the first round, that it’s hard to even speculate.

If we took the time to identify the Bills problems last year it would take all day, so we’ll give you a quick view at the stone cold fact and get them out of the way. 

On offense, the Bills finished 32nd in the NFL in 3rd down percentage at a whopping 26% (yes, worse than the Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders). 30th in the NFL in yards per game. 29th in the NFL in time of possession. 30th in the NFL in passing yards per game. 28th in the NFL in sacks allowed. Their defense was slightly better, but you get the picture.

With the calculated failures of Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick, it seems evident that the Bills should consider targeting a quarterback to rebuild the team (a la Mark Sanchez in ’09, and Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan in ’08). While Buffalo can’t expect that a QB can change their team’s fortunes as quickly as those three quarterbacks previously did, they can hope that the effort of rebuilding and starting with a franchise QB will put them on the right track.

Terrell Owens is as good as gone, Marshawn Lynch has enough problems with the law that he can’t be trusted, and thus their best offensive threat (perhaps remains to be seen, but from a fantasy football perspective) is undrafted running back Fred Jackson. As you can see, the Bills don’t exactly have the keys to success in a fiercely competitive AFC East division.

The top two quarterbacks, Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen, could undoubtedly be gone by the 9th pick in this draft. With that in mind, the Bills could be left to stretch for a skill player, or build up their trenches with a young offensive tackle to anchor their line. Six of the top nine teams could use a franchise QB (St. Louis, Washington, Seattle, Cleveland, Oakland and Buffalo), and even though most of them won’t draft one, it doesn’t leave much room for error on the Bills part. They need to take this draft seriously as they move forward from a failed regime of the past half-decade.

Let’s follow through and start looking at their potential options in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft:

Quarterback: Whether we’re talking about Bradford or Clausen, the Bills will be making the necessary move to slowly get back into contention in the AFC. I’m sure they would love their chances with either, but let’s assume that Clausen goes to the Washington Redskins at No.4 because he is seemingly a smaller risk than the aforementioned Bradford. Still, there is no guarantee he will be available at No.9 overall. If healthy, Bradford can most likely jump in from day one and provide some much needed accuracy at quarterback (Edwards completed just 56-percent, Fitzpatrick was 60-percent). Without many skill players surrounding the signal caller, Buffalo will be forced to emphasize the run game and Bradford can easily make that transition work well with his uncanny accuracy (measured as a 10 out of 10 on most scout’s ratings). 

Offensive Line: We’re envisioning Clausen and Bradford being crossed off Mel Kiper Jr’s big board prior to the Bills pick at No.9. So where do teams go when all else has failed? They look towards one of the deepest drafts in the past decade and fill in their offensive tackle position with their favorite of the bunch. With top talent like Russell Okung, Brian Bulaga, Trent Williams and Anthony Davis (stock falling) available in this years draft, Buffalo should have no trouble snagging a top tier OL if they can’t get their hands on a franchise quarterback

Sure, if the Bills selected a offensive lineman, they could hear some boos at Radio City Music Hall, but who makes those fans experts? The smart, safe choice is to rebuild from the ground up, and that involves taking a franchise left tackle. 

Wide Receiver / Running Back: It’s improbable that the Bills go after a running back in Round 1 even with so many question marks surrounding Marshawn Lynch. Fred Jackson filled in admirably as a starter in 2009 and should continue to improve if Buffalo can address their offensive line issues. Their return game in Buffalo was solid enough in 2009 so reaching for a player like C.J. Spiller (a speedy running back who can return kicks) is probably not the best usage of their pick.

Dez Bryant is definitely the No.1 rated wide out on the list, and he looks to be the type of player that could instantly help whoever is the Bills quarterback will be in 2010. Lee Evans is a solid, yet unspectacular wide receiver on one side who can go off some games and hide in others. Our feeling is that Bryant could be a missing cog in an offense that lacks a true playmaker. 

In fantasy terms, it’s probably best to stay away from the Buffalo Bills circa 2010. Fred Jackson could provide some definite RB3 potential, but with unknowns in the passing game and Marshawn Lynch still in the mix, he could see plenty of long afternoons. Lee Evans has the potential to play like a No.1 fantasy option but that key word (potential) is problematic. In reality, a WR3 ranking is probably where he goes in drafts. As for the quarterback situation, even if Buffalo lands Bradford or Clausen, in the upcoming April draft you are going to want to stay away.

Much like some of the other teams we have focused on, the offensive line must be the first solution to the problem, and all the facets of their game will improve with the right left tackle in place. Whether it is Davis, Okung, Bulaga, or Williams, the Bills should work the trenches and solidify their line.

Each NFL season can only have one champion, and in 2009, the New Orleans Saints claimed that title. The good news, though, is that right now for the 2010 season, every team is sitting even. With that in mind, the Bruno Boys got to thinking about what each NFL team needs to do in order to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next year. Thus, was born the Bruno Boys latest series which will examine the key needs that need to be addressed by all 32 NFL teams. Bruno Boys Cory takes a look at the NFC East in Part 4 of this 8-part series.

NFC EAST

Once the laughing stock of the NFC, the NFC South has developed into a formidable division. Sure, just one team from the division played post-season football, but three (New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, and Carolina Panthers) out of the four teams in the division finished with a .500 record or better, and that one team that entered post-season play, the Saints, well they didn’t do too bad for themselves. Heck, even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished 2009 strong, winning two of their last three contests, though the 1-12 record prior wasn’t too pretty. Despite the division’s recent success, football is a game in which you can’t rest on your laurels. If the NFC South wants to continue their upward trend, then they’re going to have address the needs laid out below.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys do not feel like they are far away from a trip to the Super Bowl. Owner Jerry Jones likes a lot of the pieces that are in place, including head coach Wade Phillips, and will like use the off-season to refine the offense and build depth on defense. Despite it being an uncapped year, and Dallas having an unlimited amount of money to spend, don’t look for the Cowboys to be big players in the free-agent market. Look for them to try and lock up wide receiver Miles Austin to a long-term deal while addressing some of their needs through the 2010 NFL Draft.

Team Strengths:

- Tony Romo (Entering 2009, everyone thought Romo would struggle with the loss of Terrell Owens; however, he enjoyed his most efficient season to date)

- Good Core of Running Backs (Marion Barber and Felix Jones provide the Cowboys with a solid 1-2 punch that makes opponents tough to game-plan against. Barber is the bruiser while Jones makes big plays. The team also has Tashard Choice, though he could be traded during the off-season)

- Miles Austin (Came out of nowhere to put together 81 receptions, 1,320 receiving and 11 touchdowns in 2009. Will once again be the primary big play target for Romo and is still developing as an every down receiver)

- Jason Witten (The tight end only has six touchdowns over his last 32 games, but you can’t argue against his 271 receptions over the last three years)

- Solid Core of Linebackers (DeMarcus Ware is one of the best outside linebackers in all of football and has 45 sacks since 2007. Keith Brooking adds veteran leadership and still plays at a high level while Bradie James has four straight seasons of 100+ tackles.)

Team Needs:

1. More Talent at Wide Receiver - Austin is starting to realize his potential as a wide receiver but the rest of the group is not so intimidating. The Cowboys need somebody to put opposite of Austin and it isn’t likely they’ll attempt to do so through the draft. Currently the big wide receiver names floating around in free agency and in trade talks are Brandon Marshall and Terrell Owens. A reuniting of Owens and Dallas won’t happen so we’ll see if the Cowboys make a run at Marshall. If they were to attempt to find a receiver in the draft they would be wise to target more experienced guys like Golden Tate of Notre Dame.

2.  Improve the Offensive Line – The offensive line needs work. Flozell Adams no longer can cut it at left tackle as the Cowboys often had to assign him help in blocking. If the Cowboys can’t protect Romo then their season is over. We would expect the Cowboys to address this area through the draft. A guy like Oklahoma’s Trent Williams or Rutgers’ Anthony Davis would look good in a Dallas uniform.

3. Shoring up the Safety Position – Between Gerald Sensabaugh and Ken Hamlin the Cowboys are decent at safety but it remains a weak spot on an otherwise solid defense. An upgrade at this position would also take less pressure off of corners Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins. Taylor Mays from USC will likely draw a lot of attention from Jones and the Cowboys, especially after running a 4.24/4.43 (unofficial/adjusted) 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.

New York Giants

The New York Giants were known for their elite defense during their recent title run but entering 2010 that side of the ball needs a little bit of loving after they were 30th in the league in points allowed last season. Aging and injured players at linebacker and underdeveloped players at cornerback and safety have left the secondary in a bit of doldrums the past couple of seasons. Team owner John Mara has said publicly he doesn’t think the Giants need to go on a spending spree; however, he did address their issue at safety by signing Antrel Rolle to a five-year, $37 million deal. Look for New York to add a couple more pieces to the puzzle while using the draft to bring in more talent on defense.

Team Strengths: 

- Eli Manning (He had a career high in completion percentage and touchdown passes a season ago and should continue to make progress as he enter his seventh NFL season)

- Depth at Running Back (Brandon Jacobs struggled in 2009 but has shown potential. The emergence of Ahmad Bradshaw has the Giants ready to enter 2010 with a RBBC approach. Danny Ware, Gartrell Johnson and Andre Brown all have a shot to get touches in New York)

- Smart Wide Receivers (When Plaxico Burress went to jail it looked like the Giants were going to struggle in this department, but that wasn’t the case. Steve Smith, Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks created quite the tandem and should continue to get better this season)

Team Needs:

1.Finding an Elite Linebacker – Antonio Pierce has been released, leaving guys like Michael Boley and Chase Blackburn as the top players at the position. Needless to say the Giants will look to pick up an elite linebacker early in the draft and they’ll likely look for a middle linebacker. The Giants would love to be able to get Alabama’s Rolando McClain, who is a guy that could step in right away and produce. Unfortunately, McClain may not be there when they pick at No. 15.

2. Improve at Cornerback  – Corey Webster and Aaron Ross are recent high draft picks by the Giants but neither has lived up to his potential. The Giants would love to get their hands on a true shutdown corner. Florida’s Joe Haden may be available when the Giants pick. Though he was considered a top-10 pick his sub-par 40 times may allow the Giants to snag him. If not then Boise State’s Kyle Wilson is a guy the Giants could target instead though they may try to trade down a few picks to get him but pay less.

3. Adding Depth at Defensive Tackle – The Giants are thin at defensive tackle but they would also like to upgrade the position to take the heat off of ends Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka and Osi Umenyiora. Boosting this position would also help the rest of the defense. Better pressure from the defensive line would allow more room for the linebackers to make plays as well as not put the defensive backs in poor position on passing plays. The Giants may be able to use a second round pick to target Penn State’s Jared Odrick, Terrence Cody of Alabama or Georgia’s Geno Atkins.

Philadelphia Eagles

Like the Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles have been known to have a strong defense but are going to spend most of the off-season upgrading that side of the ball. Offensively, they will need to build depth along the offensive line and at running back but defense is the point of focus. The Eagles have pressing needs at pretty much every position on defense and with it being an uncapped year they could be in the market for some of the noteworthy free agents. However, head coach Andy Reid likes targeting his own players and looks to do so in the NFL Draft. don’t be surprised if Philadelphia does most of their work in the draft, as usual.

Team Strengths:

- Donovan McNabb (The Eagles also have Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick, but it’s McNabb that makes Philadelphia tick and he once again posted solid statistics in his 11th season)

- Talented Young Wide Outs (After just two seasons, DeSean Jackson is already a top tied wide receiver and second year receiver Jeremy Maclin has the talent to be just as good as Jackson. Philly is set at the wide out position for years to come)

- Brent Celek (No one can complain about his 76 receptions, 971 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Celek will once again be McNabb’s most reliable target on intermediate routes)

- Trent Cole (Cole is one of the best in the NFL at getting to the quarterback and his 12.5 sacks tied a career-high in 2009. At 27, Cole is entering his prime and he should be even better in 2010)

- Asante Samuel (The veteran cornerback is prone to get beat from time-to-time, but he did intercept nine passes in 2009 and is a threat to opposing quarterbacks trying to throw on his side of the field)

Team Needs:

1. Better Player from the Defensive Line – Cole, an end, is a bright spot for the Eagles but he’s not going to take over a game and could benefit from having a strong defensive end on the opposite side of him. Tackles Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkely are recent high draft picks that haven’t realized their full potential. Adding an first round draft pick at end or tackle would make sense for the rest of the defense and would go in line with head coach Andy Reid’s philosophy that you build teams from the inside out. Expect the Eagles to target tackles Dan Williams from Tennessee or Brian Price from UCLA.

2. Depth at Linebacker – The Eagles released Will Witherspoon. Jeremiah Trotter is expected to once again retire and outside of Akeem Jordan no one can stay healthy in Philadelphia The Eagles expect Stewart Bradley and Omar Gaither to return from season ending injuries and make an impact right away; however, the team needs to add depth at a position that has been hampered by injuries. A mid-round pick for this position is likely, but don’t be surprised if the Eagles make another trade here.

3. Address Their Issues at Safety – The top two safeties listed on the Eagles depth chart right now are Quintin Mikell and Sean Jones. Mikell is solid as a strong safety, but the Eagles need to target free safeties through free agency or the NFL Draft. Earl Thomas of Texas probably won’t be there when Philly drafts at No. 24 but they could possibly land someone like Nate Allen of South Florida in Round 2.

Washington Redskins

Given how active the Washington Redskins have been in the free agency market under owner Dan Snyder, many expected them to be big spenders this season, especially with the threat of an uncapped season ahead. Yet the Redskins did not sign defensive end Julius Peppers or linebacker Karlos Dansby or safety Antrel Rolle. Now, many people are wondering if there is a change of philosophy in Washington. Perhaps new head coach Mike Shanahan has gotten inside Snyder’s head, convincing the owner to build through the draft and player development instead of free agency. If that’s the case then expect to see a flurry of picks on the offensive side of the ball.

Team Strengths:

- Santana Moss (He doesn’t possess the world class speed that he once had but he is the staple in the receiving game and should fare well in Mike Shanahan’s offense)

- Albert Haynesworth (Fans and ownership grew frustrated with Haynesworth’s lack of commitment in 2009 but he’s one of the best run stoppers in all of football. Shanahan won’t put up wth his laziness and look for Haynesworth to earn his money this year)

- Veteran Linebackers (London Fletcher has been arguably the best true tackler in the NFL over the past decade. Brian Orakpo is young, physical and should be a force in this league and Rocky McIntosh is coming off a solid season and has been a consistent performer in each of his last three seasons)

Team Needs:

1. Improve the Offensive Line – To begin to rebuild this offense the Redskins will need a strong line, and they’ll need to start at the tackle position following the retirement of Chris Samuels. The Redskins did sign Artis Hicks from the Minnesota Vikings but Washington holds the fourth overall draft pick. Sure they could use it on a quarterback like Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame or Sam Bradford of Oklahoma but is it worth it when they can potentially land an elite tackle prospect, such Russell Okung of Oklahoma State? However, if they decide to go with a signal caller, there are a ton of strong tackles in this draft, so perhaps the Redskins could pick one up early in the second round.

2. Adding Depth at Running Back – We all know how much Mike Shanahan loves his running backs and it just so happens Washington is in need at that position anyway. Clinton Portis’ best days are behind him and the Redskins cleaned house on all of his back-ups. Looking at the draft, Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech and Montario Hardesty of Tennessee would be good picks in the second round for the Redskins, as would Stanford’s Toby Gerhart. With Shanahan, it’s not a matter of if he picks a running back in the draft this year, it’s a matter of when.

3. Upgrade at Quarterback – The situation regarding incumbent starter Jason Campbell is a touchy one. One on hand he’s not the worst quarterback in the league and has shown, when he’s given time, that he can be an adequate quarterback. Not helping matters are the different systems he’s had to learn during his career. But Campbell may be beyond repair and Shanahan may not be in the mood for a reclamation project anyway. If that’s the case, then the Redskins would likely be able to choose from Jimmy Clausen or Sam Bradford at No.4 overall. However, if they decide to take a franchise tackle, the Redskins can target a developmental quarterback like Jevan Snead of Ole Miss or Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan later in the draft.

Consisting of 10 members of the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Staff, along with guest columnist’s from Fighting Chance Fantasy and The IDP Guru, our first of many Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft was a 16-round affair based on a standard scoring league (Pass TDs – 4 points, All Other TDs – 6 points, 25 Yards Passing – 1 point, 10 Yards Rushing/Receiving – 1 point). Outside of having to field a starting line-up occupied by 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 D, owners were free to compile their rosters any way in which they pleased.

All commentary after each pick is provided by the Bruno Boys staff member who made that pick. The draft started on February 15, 2010 and we will report round-by-round updates as they are available. Make sure to check back for more commentary on our Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft.

FEBRUARY MOCK DRAFT ROUND 8 RESULTS

10.01: Bruno Boys Cavigs – Cadillac Williams (TB) — This is a start three wide receiver league and with only three on my current roster I debated taking a fourth here; however, none of them interested me enough to pull the trigger. Instead, I will address my back-up wide receivers with 2010 sleeper picks and take back-to-back running backs at the turn. By drafting Cadillac Williams, I feel I have solidified my depth at the position. Cadillac compiled 1,040 total yards last season and his 93 touches over the last five games are a sign that his knees are healthy and better things are to come.

10.02: Bruno Boys Greg – Nate Burleson (Sea) — Burleson may not have had a great season in 2009, where he had 63 catches for 812 yards, and 3 touchdowns. However, you did see his quarterback Matt Hasselbeck look his way a good bit, as he was targeted 103 times. The Seahawks offense should be much improved in 2010 and as long as Hasselbeck gets time to throw, he should be able to find Burleson deep quite a bit. Look for Burleson to at least double his touchdown production this season.  **pick was made before Burleson signed with the Detroit Lions**

10.03: Bruno Boys IDP Guru – Ryan Matthews (FA) — Mathews probably had the best combine of any running back and is arguably the second best running back in the draft behind C.J. Spiller. Mathews brings both speed and power to the table which could make him a great fantasy football running back. If he ends up with the right team, look for Matthews to make an immediate impact.

10.04: Bruno Boys Kyle – Lee Evans (Buf) — Evans is coming off the least productive season of his career, and with no Terrell Owens being force-fed passes, and a new coaching staff in place that actually believes in throwing the ball further than five yards downfield, I’m completely confident that Evans will rebound.

10.05: Bruno Boys Cory -  Visanthe Shiancoe (Min) — I waited on a tight end and still was able to get a good one in Visanthe Shiancoe of the Minnesota Vikings. He had just 59 receptions for 566 yards last season, but 11 of those catches went for touchdowns. That’s not an aberration either. The year before he caught seven touchdowns with guys like Gus Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson as his quarterback. So yeah, I love the value of Shiancoe with this pick.

10.06: Bruno Boys Allie – Leon Washington (NYJ) — What I like about Washington is that he’s a guy who always finds ways to compile the yards any which way he can. He’s also a solid pass-catching back and I expect this will be his role regardless of whether it’s Greene or Jones (rumored to be cut by the Jets at the time of this pick) getting the majority of touches. Using my 10th round pick on Washington adds depth to my bench – not only is he a quality reserve fantasy football running back (especially if Jones is out of the picture) – I think he also has nice sleeper potential.  **pick was made before Jones was cut by New York**

10.07: Bruno Boys Jimbo – Laurence Maroney (NE) — Laurence Maroney went through a nice hot streak at one point last season where he became the true feature back for the New England Patriots temporarily. I’m not asking for much with this pick given how this team seems to like to play running back merry-go-round. However, stashing him on my bench could be beneficial if he hits another hot streak at some point in 2010, which very well may happen.

10.08: Bruno Boys Jacob – Brett Favre (Min) — I’m typically the fantasy football owner that drafts a stud quarterback and doesn’t even draft a backup; however, with Matt Ryan as my incumbent starter, I need to solidify the QB depth. I honestly have no idea if Favre comes back in 2010 (I wonder if Brett even knows?), but I figure he’s worthy of a 10th round pick. He has great receiving options in Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin and Visanthe Shiancoe, so if he comes back he could definitely be a top-10 fantasy QB in 2010.

10.09: Bruno Boys Hallam – Arian Foster (Hou) — OK, this probably seems early to a lot of you, but I am drafting with some very smart people here and I want to get a running back with some upside. I’m not convinced that the Texans are sold on Steve Slaton and Foster finished the season very strong with over 200 yards and three touchdowns in the season’s final two games. He does have a tendency to fumble, which could limit his touches based on coach Gary Kubiak’s history, but I like Foster and think he could possibly even grab the starting job with a strong preseason.

10.10: Bruno Boys Whooley – Vince Young (Ten) — What a difference a year makes? 2008 saw Vince Young dealing with a bevy of mental issues that resulted in the Titans quarterback backing up veteran Kerry Collins to begin the 2009 season. Collins, though, struggled to get the Titans going, giving Young another opportunity to prove himself. And, he did just that. Young brought the Titans back from an 0-6 start to a respectable 8-8 record at season’s end. In the process, Young amassed double digit fantasy football points in 8 of 10 games. I feel comfortable with him as my back-up QB behind Tom Brady.

10.11: Bruno Boys Larry – Eli Manning (NYG) — Eli might not consistently put up the elite fantasy football numbers big brother Peyton does, but he had some very good games in 2009 passing for over 4,000 yards. He had a good touchdown to interception ratio and he will be a good compliment to my No. 1 quarterback Jay Cutler. If Cutler is my QB1, then Manning will be my QB1a.

10.12: Bruno Boys Matt – Eddie Royal (Den) — I can’t believe I landed Royal in the 10th round in a league that starts three wide receivers. Josh McDaniels has already stated he expects a bounce back year from Royal and will try to get him more involved in the offense. And if Brandon Marshall gets traded? Quite a bit of upside for a guy that will enter 2010 as my WR5 option.

Round 10 Commentary from Bruno Boys Cavigs: With this being our first fantasy football mock draft of the 2010 season you don’t know how deep the crop of talent is going to be; however, I’m amazed with the quality of players at each position still available this late in the draft. In my opinion, all 12 staff members did an excellent job of addressing a need with their Round 10 pick.

With running-back-by-committee (RBBC) approaches surfacing around the league it has increased the talent pool at the position and that is why we are seeing talented running backs with upside go this late in fantasy football drafts. At pick 10.01 I snagged Cadillac Williams as my RB5. People forget that Caddy played in 16 games last year and went for over 1,000 yards in a bad offense. He won’t be a weekly started, but he will be a nice bye week and match-up play. Shortly after that, Bruno Boys IDP Guru went the route of drafting a rookie runner in Ryan Matthews. Out of Fresno State, Matthews wasn’t tested much in college however, he is a bruising running back who can make an easy transition into the NFL. Every year a rookie running back produces immediately and if Matthews lands in the right spot he could be that guy.

In hopes he can return to his 2006 form, Bruno Boys Kyle spent pick 10.04 on Lee Evans as his WR3 and Bruno Boys Cory addressed his tight end needs at 10.05 by drafting Visanthe Shiancoe, who’s 18 touchdowns lead all tight ends over the past two NFL seasons.

With three of the next four picks, we saw owners add depth at the most coveted fantasy football position; running back. Bruno Boys Allie went the upside route and drafted one of the NFL’s most dynamic players in Leon Washington. There is no guarantee Washington will stay in New York in 2010; however, that doesn’t hurt his fantasy outlook. After fracturing his leg, Washington is on track to be ready for training camp and is a lock to touch the football 10-15 times regardless of the uniform he wears. He is the type of guy you draft as your RB4. Next, we saw Bruno Boys Jimbo go with Laurance Maroney of the New England Patriots. Maroney will once again be part of a RBBC backfield but as Jimbo mentioned, if he can catch fire he should be fantasy worthy for a period of time. Spending a Round 10 pick on Maroney is worth taking a chance; though I’m not convinced it will happen. Rounding out the run on running backs was Bruno Boys Hallam taking Arian Foster with pick 10.09. This could be a round to early for a guy who plays in an offense in which the coach can’t commit to one guy; however, Hallam is high on Foster and felt he wouldn’t be able to draft him if he waited any longer. Foster did show signs of hope towards the end of the 2009 campaign but if he fumbles early on his days could be numbered in Houston. After all, it’s not often that an undrafted free agent gets multiple chances to earn his keep. Hallam better hope Foster integrated sticky glue into his hands during the off-season.

Finally, we saw Bruno Boys Whooley and Bruno Boys Larry draft back-up quarterbacks in Vince Young and Eli Manning. If you are drafting Young it should be as a back-up to a stud quarterback and that is what Whooley did. He has Young to play behind Tom Brady, who will only be sitting when the Patriots have a bye. As for Larry, he did what every owner should do when drafting Jay Cutler hoping for a bounce back year. Get a veteran who can slide right and and produce when Cutler has a bad match-up or starts throwing interceptions. Manning won’t win you a fantasy game, but he certainly won’t lose you one and Larry is now sitting pretty playing match-ups at the quarterback position.

Overall, this round was solid from top to bottom and it should be interesting to look back on this after the 2010 season and see which Round 10 pick helped bring one of these teams to the fantasy football promise land.

Each NFL season can only have one champion, and in 2009, the New Orleans Saints claimed that title. The good news, though, is that right now for the 2010 season, every team is sitting even. With that in mind, the Bruno Boys got to thinking about what each NFL team needs to do in order to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next year. Thus, was born the Bruno Boys latest series which will examine the key needs that need to be addressed by all 32 NFL teams. Bruno Boys Kyle takes a look at the NFC South in Part 3 of this 8-part series.

NFC SOUTH

Once the laughing stock of the NFC, the NFC South has developed into a formidable division. Sure, just one team from the division played post-season football, but three (New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, and Carolina Panthers) out of the four teams in the division finished with a .500 record or better, and that one team that entered post-season play, the Saints, well they didn’t do too bad for themselves. Heck, even the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished 2009 strong, winning two of their last three contests, though the 1-12 record prior wasn’t too pretty. Despite the division’s recent success, football is a game in which you can’t rest on your laurels. If the NFC South wants to continue their upward trend, then they’re going to have address the needs laid out below.

New Orleans Saints

What is there to really say about the team that just won the Super Bowl? New Orleans will go into this off-season really needing only to add solid depth, while also adding a few key components to its defense.

Team Strengths:

- Passing Attack (If there was any doubt about Drew Brees’ status as one of the premier passers in the NFL going into 2009, that’s over and done with. The QB has now thrown for at least 4,300 yards and 26 TDs in each of the last four seasons)
- Stable of Wide Receivers (Brees’ biggest strength may be his ability to spread the love; a strength that is aided greatly by the depth the Saints showcase at wide receiver with Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, Devery Henderson, and Lance Moore)
- Running Backs (The Saints look likely to retain the services of restricted free agent, Pierre Thomas, and will bring Reggie Bush back. Those two should be able to keep the ground game rolling and defenses honest)

Team Needs:

1. Defensive Line – The Saints were 21st in the league against the run, and allowed the fourth-most rushing scores in all of football. They need a defensive tackle to complement former first-round pick Sedrick Ellis, as well as depth at defensive end.

2. Linebacker – Scott Fujita is an unrestricted free agent, and they’ll likely try and re-sign him, but they simply need better overall players at the position. Jonathan Vilma is very good, so they’re set in the middle, but even if they do re-sign Fujita, they have to get better at linebacker if they wish to hoist the Lombardi Trophy yet again.

3. Safety – The Saints were not good against the pass, coming in 26th in the league in that statistical category. They got by because they created so many turnovers, but that’s not something you can count on every year. Darren Sharper is a free agent, and the Saints want to re-sign him, but he’s 34 years old, so they’ll need to add youth no matter what.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons finished the 2009 season with a 9-7 record, but that was only after winning their final three games of the season. They’ve already addressed their biggest off-season need via free agency, having reportedly signed cornerback Dunta Robinson for six-years for $57 million. Robinson’s acquisition should go a long way in helping to shore up a secondary that ranked 28th against the pass in 2008, but the team still has more to accomplish if they want to join the Saints in the playoffs.

Team Strengths:

- Matt Ryan (In drafting Ryan, the Falcons definitely landed the franchise QB they needed after the Michael Vick debacle. In two seasons, Ryan has led the Falcons to a 20-10 record in games he hast started)
- Michael Turner (Perhaps their is such a thing as the 370+ curse, as Turner’s 2009 season was riddled by injury; however, when on the field, he was still one of the best RBs out there)
- Top of the Line Pass Catchers (Roddy White continued his development into one of the premier receivers in the league in 2008, while veteran tight end Tony Gonzalez proved he still has something left in the tank. Ryan couldn’t ask for better targets.)

Team Needs:

1. Linebacker – Curtis Lofton is a good player at middle linebacker, and Stephen Nicholas was solid as well, but Mike Peterson is 33 years old, and they simply need more playmakers at the linebacker position.

2. Offensive Line -  Atlanta may have given up just 27 sacks on the year in 2009, but don’t be fooled, much of that was due to the quick thinking and release of Ryan. There are needs up and down the O-Line for the Falcons, notably at the center position, and there doesn’t seem to be an in-house option to cover that, so look for Atlanta to go after an interior lineman or two in the draft.

3. Defensive End: John Abraham is still solid at age 31, but he accumulated just 5.5 sacks last season after getting 16.5 in 2008. The bigger problem, though, is Jamaal Anderson. The former seventh overall pick has been an epic bust, and had just half of a sack last season, and has only 2.5 in his three-year career.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers, who finished 8-8 last season, have made their off-season strategy very clear – purge the roster of aging or overpriced veterans. They mercifully released turnover machine and quarterback Jake Delhomme, and have watched stalwart defensive end Julius Peppers sign with the Bears while also releasing a number of defensive linemen. Will the move to get younger pay off?

Team Strengths:

- Power Running Game (The dynamic duo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart wreaked havoc on opposing defenses in 2008, making the Panthers the third best rush offense in the NFL with an average of 156.1 yards per game)
- Steve Smith (Smith’s numbers were down in 2009, but more of that was a result of bad quarterback play than a decline in his skills. Prior to breaking his arm in Week 16, Smith had three straight games with a score)
- Offensive Line (As good as Williams and Stewart are, they weren’t getting those rush yards solely on their own. Much of the Panthers’ success on the ground had to do with the big boys up front clearing the way for the RBs)

Team Needs:

1. Quarterback – Carolina trudged the No. 27 passing offense onto the field last season, and they need to fix that in order to balance out their potent running attack. Matt Moore will likely go into the season as the starter for the team, but he’s unproven, meaning they still need to bring in a veteran back-up just in case.

2. Defensive Line – The Panthers had just 31 sacks last season, the ninth-fewest in the NFL, and they’ve already lost Julius Peppers (10.5 sacks) this off-season. Meanwhile, Tyler Brayton, who was second on the team with 5.0 sacks, is a free agent. The good news is that Charles Grant is a former third-round pick who had four sacks last season, and last season, they traded their first-round pick in this year’s draft for Everette Brown, who had 2.5 sacks, so there is some promise there. Still, they need to fill in the gaps.

3. Receiver/Tight End – There’s Steve Smith and then there’s … Steve Smith. Carolina desperately needs to get more offensive pass-catching weapons in the fold to bolster a weak passing game. They have second-round flops Dwayne Jarrett and Dexter Jackson (signed after Tampa Bay released him), so it’s possible one of those two finally develops, but don’t hold your breath.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

There isn’t much the Bucs don’t need to improve on. They have a young quarterback that struggled, few offensive weapons, and a run defense that was the worst in the NFL last season. So, their strategy is pretty easy to decipher – they need everything.

Team Strengths:

- Solid Running Attack (You know it’s bad when one of your team’s strengths is a rushing attack that ranked 23rd in the league. But, in reality, the Bucs do have guys on their roster that can run with the football, boasting the likes of Carnell Williams, Derrick Ward, and Earnest Graham. The key is getting them attempts by keeping drives going with the passing game)
- Kellen Winslow (The Bucs’ top pass catcher in 2009, Winslow hauled in 77 passes for 884 yards and 5 scores, fine production from the tight end position)
- CB Aqib Talib and S Tanard Jackson (Both Talib and Jackson were able to frustrate opposing QBs, as both tallied 5 INTs in 2009)

Team Needs:

1. Wide Receiver – Only Winslow had at least 40 catches and over 600 yards for the Bucs in 2009. Antonio Bryant is a free agent, and the team may not re-sign him, but no matter what happens, it’s imperative for them to go after wide outs in free agency or, more likely, the draft. If they don’t, it’s going to be hard for sophomore QB Josh Freeman to continue his development as an NFL QB.

2. Defensive Line – Tampa lacks playmakers along the defensive line, and that’s evident when you look at their roster and the stats from last year. Tampa tallied just 28 sacks on the season and allowed opposing RBs to gash them, giving up a staunch 4.8 yards per carry. They need a pass-rushing presence on the edge of the defense and run stopper in the middle.

3. Cornerback – With Talib and Jackson, the Bucs have the makings of a solid young secondary, but they’ll need another cornerback to eventually replace Ronde Barber. Still, they’re not that far away from having a very good back four.

With the 2010 NFL Draft a month and a half away, mock drafts are plentiful. In fact, there are already 139 mock drafts published for the big day. If you took a minute to scan through a few of those drafts, you probably noticed that there are as many as six or seven players mentioned that might go to your favorite team come April. Obviously, only one (or maybe none) will end up being on the team you root for, but part of what makes the 2010 NFL Draft so interesting is the different possibilities that can change your favorite team’s future.

In this article, we’ll break down the possibilities that lay ahead for the Washington Redskins. With that said, let’s get to it.

Washington Redskins

Similar to the rest of the teams we have looked at in the NFL Draft articles we have posted in the previous month, the Washington Redskins are in desperate need of some big changes. The team has already brought in Mike Shanahan as their Head Coach, and they are now looking to make some serious additions in this off-season, as they look to keep up with the rest of the NFC East.

With the fourth pick overall in the 2010 NFL Draft, the ‘Skins can definitely make a splash by drafting a quarterback in the first round. No offense to Jason Campbell, but he just doesn’t seem the QB to turn this franchise around. Whether it’s Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen, going with a QB on Day 1 would give the Redskins a potential franchise QB for years to come.  If they’re not enamored by either of the top two quarterback options or have extreme faith in Campbell, another route the Redskins could go is the offensive tackle position.

Truth be told, the Redskins could go either way on this one. Fortunately, a franchise player should be available to them at either position come their pick (especially with initial mock drafts showing two defensive tackles assuredly going off the board within the first three picks). Whether the ‘skins go with Clausen/Bradford or Okung/Davis (Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State/Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers), they are setting themselves up nicely for the coming years.

But, the question is who marks the biggest improvement to the Washington Redskins for 2010?

An offensive tackle is typically the surest way to make improvements for fantasy purposes and more importantly, for a team’s win-loss record. You don’t need to go any farther than looking at the Miami Dolphins wand what they did with the first overall pick in 2008 to see what kind of improvements a premier offensive linemen can bring. After finishing up 1-15 in 2007, the Dolphins catapulted to 11-5 in 2008 to win the AFC East after drafting Jake Long, OT, Michigan in the first round. While it’s impossible to know if Okung or Davis can make that significant of an impact, if the Redskins want to be as competitive as possible, that may be the right pick.

Okung is probably more balanced and more experienced (a senior out of a Big 12 school), than Davis is (a junior out of a Big East school). To make things more difficult for the ‘Skins braintrust, Mel Kiper Jr. has Okung ranked ahead of Davis, while Todd McShay ranks Davis ahead of Okung. Needless to say, neither will be a bad pick where the Redskins are at with the 4th overall selection.

With regards to potentially drafting a QB, the only issue that could occur would be if Campbell exceeds expectations and turns in a career year where he leads the ‘Skins to the playoffs. That could leave the Redskins in a predicament in which they have to serviceable QBs on the roster. Not a bad spot to be in, but a predicament nonetheless.

From a fantasy perspective, this is a team that really doesn’t offer much to the 10-12 team league fantasy owner. Campbell is hardly a back-up QB, RB Clinton Portis was a worthy fantasy option until injuries derailed his 2009 season (with that in mind, Portis can definitely excel under Mike Shanahan again as he did in his first two years in the NFL: 3,787 total yards, 31 touchdowns and could prove to be great value in 2010 drafts), and the wide receiving corps leave much to be desired. An offensive lineman can definitely bring the most help to this struggling fantasy entity.

Each NFL season can only have one champion, and in 2009, the New Orleans Saints claimed that title. The good news, though, is that right now for the 2010 season, every team is sitting even. With that in mind, the Bruno Boys got to thinking about what each NFL team needs to do in order to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next year. Thus, was born the Bruno Boys latest series which will examine the key needs that need to be addressed by all 32 NFL teams. Bruno Boys Larry takes a look at the NFC North in Part 2 of this 8-part series.

NFC NORTH

Being born in raised in the Midwest has allowed me to watch NFC North football my entire life. It’s a division that has bolstered some great defensive teams and some of the greatest nicknames in football history. Teams like the “Monsters of the Midway” and the “Purple People Eaters” played in a division referred to as the “Black and Blue” division, but those days are long gone. It has been more then a decade since a team from the NFC North has won a Super Bowl. It’s also a division that has possibly the worst team of the decade in the Detroit Lions. Despite the Lions continued struggles, the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers both made the playoffs in 2009 and look to be putting the division back on the map. The two bottom teams in the NFC North, the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions, have both been extremely active early in this off-season. So let’s take a look at what else we might expect from these four teams during the 2010 NFL off-season.

Minnesota Vikings

The addition of Brett Favre proved to be better for the Minnesota Vikings in 2009 than most of us expected. Favre, along with a good defense, a top notch running game and good play from their wide receivers helped the Vikings to a 13-3 record. They went to the NFC Championship game where they lost in overtime to the eventual Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints. This is a talented team who should once again be in the mix for the NFC North title with the hopes of making it to the Super Bowl this season. Decisions on whether or not to retire by Favre and defensive tackle Pat Williams will dictate which direction this team goes with off-season acquisitions; however, this should definitely be a team to reckon with once again in the NFC.

Team Strengths:

- Dominant Defensive Line (Pat Williams, Kevin Williams and Jared Allen are as strong as it gets up front on defense. Pat Williams has hinted at possible retirement, but I think as close as this team is to a possible Super Bowl he comes back for one more year)
- Adrian Peterson (If he is not the best running back in all of football, he is in the top two or three. AD topped 1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns in each of his first three seasons and is coming off of a 1,383 yard 18 touchdown performance in 2009)
- Sidney Rice (He broke out in his third season in the NFL with 83 catches for 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns, but if he is going to repeat that type of performance in 2010 he will need Favre to return for one more year)

Team Needs:

1. Getting Brett Favre to Return – To say this team needs Favre to return if they want to compete for the NFC North crown and a Super Bowl championship is an understatement. He had possibly the best season of his career in 2009 with 4,202 passing yards with 33 touchdowns and a career-low seven interceptions. The team is happy to give Favre all the time he needs to make his decision, even if it goes into training camp, but if he decides not to return the Vikings can kiss any championship aspirations good-bye. Neither Tarvaris Jackson nor Sage Rosenfels can fill a void left by Favre.

2. Cornerback – The Vikings will be looking for a cornerback to play opposite Antoine Winfield after Cedric Griffin tore his ACL in the NFC Championship. The injury will keep him out until at least October; however, it could very well take until 2011 before he returns to form. There is some good depth at cornerback in this year’s draft and Minnesota could target one late in the first round.

3. Improve the Offensive Line – They have one of the best offensive guards in the NFL in Steve Hutchinson; however, right guard Anthony Herrera struggled to open up running lanes for Adrian Peterson and center John Sullivan did not look very good in his first year as a starter. Imagine how good Peterson could be if he had the flexibility to run to the right side of the field, instead of relying on running behind Hutchinson. They could target both guard and center positions in the early-to-middle rounds of the upcoming NFL draft.

Green Bay Packers

After a shaky start the Green Bay Packers finished 2009 winning seven of their last nine games. An 11-5 record was good enough to get them into the playoffs, where they lost to the Arizona Cardinals 51-45, in what might have been the best playoff game of the year. This Packers team has a good mix of young talent and veteran leadership. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has many fans saying Brett who (Favre of course). With a few key off-season acquisitions this team has a legitimate chance to not only fight for the NFC North crown, but could also make a push to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

Team Strengths:

- Aaron Rodgers (Many people were skeptical about Rodgers being able to replace Brett Favre in Green Bay. In just two seasons he has elevated himself into an elite NFL quarterback)
- Charles Woodson (At 33 years of age Woodson continues to play at an extremely high level as he proved so by winning the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2009)
- Clay Matthews (51 total tackles, 10 sacks, three fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and touchdown is a pretty good stat line for Matthews in his rookie season for the Packers)

Team Needs:

1. Cornerback – Yes they do have the reigning Defensive Player of the Year at cornerback in Charles Woodson, but he will be 34 in October. Al Harris is 35 years old and is coming off ACL surgery in November. Fourth-year man Tramon Williams filled in nicely for Green Bay after Harris’ injury, but the Packers will likely look to add a talented young corner in this year’s draft, which appears to be deep in talent.

2. Improve the Offensive Line – Whether it’s through free agency or the NFL Draft the Packers have to find a way to keep Aaron Rodgers off his back, as he was sacked 51 times last season. Many people blame Rodgers for holding onto the ball for too long; however, if you watched Green Bay player in 2009 you would have noticed that poor offensive line play was a big contributor. In all fairness several injuries forced the team to use many line combination’s throughout the year. They did play much better after left tackle Chad Clifton returned and the team did just resign him, though he is aging and injury prone. They will definitely look to solidify the line heading into the 2010 season.

3. Another Outside Linebacker – Green Bay had to be thrilled with the play of rookie OLB Clay Matthews as mentioned above in Team Strengths, but they could use another rush OLB to play opposite him. The Packers run a 3-4 defense and it is extremely important for the linebackers to get to the quarterback. Matthews had 10 sacks last season; however, Brad Jones managed just four on the other side of the field. In order for this defense to continue to be successful they will need to find another OLB to put pressure on the quarterback.

Chicago Bears

The Bears are coming off an extremely disappointing season in which they finished 7-9. This is not what the fans or organization expected when they made a huge off-season trade for franchise quarterback Jay Cutler. Head coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo are both on the hot seat. If this team doesn’t make the playoffs in 2010 the entire coaching staff and management team could be relieved of their duties. Thus far this off-season they are pulling out all the stops. They have added offensive coordinator Mike Martz and they landed this year’s top free agent defensive end Julius Peppers. There is a lot on the line for Chicago in the upcoming season, making this a very important off-season for the former Monsters of Midway.

Team Strengths:

- Julius Peppers (Chicago made a huge splash in free agency adding the perennial Pro-Bowl defensive end. The former Carolina Panthers standout will be a huge boost for the defensive line and will give the Bears’ Cover 2 defense a much needed pass rush)
- Jay Cutler (Even though Cutler threw 26 interceptions in 2009 and was not the quarterback Bears’ fans envisioned, he is still a very good talent with a lot of upside and new offensive coordinator Mike Martz should be able to help him improve)
- Kickoff Returns (Johnny Knox averaged 29.0 yards per return on 32 kickoffs, while Daniel Manning averaged 26.6 yards per return on 28 kickoffs. With these two returning kicks the Bears get very good starting field position)

Team Needs:

1. Offensive Line – The Bears and their fans were disappointed with the play of the offense last season. Much more was expected from both Cutler and second-year running back Matt Forte. Improving a woeful offensive line will go a long way into helping both players have a much better 2010 season. After already making a big splash in free agency with the signing of Julius Peppers and backup running back Chester Taylor, they should now focus on improving their offensive line.

2. A No. 1 Wide Receiver – Devin Hester, Devin Aromashodu and Earl Bennett all showed flashes of brilliance last season, but none of them played with any real consistency. Aromashodu proved to be Cutler’s favorite target down the stretch and he appears ready to step up into the No. 1 spot; however, he will have to prove he can do it over an entire season. They have talent and speed at the position and they don’t necessarily need to add another piece, but they desperately need improved play at the position. The addition of Martz and an improved offensive line could go a long way in helping this receiving core play at a higher level.

3. Improve the Secondary – The Bears allowed 3,382 passing yards against last season. Opposing quarterbacks were able to complete 64.2 percent of their passes, which included 29 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions. An improved pass rush with the addition of Peppers should help their secondary, but they will look to make changes at both cornerback and safety. Chicago doesn’t have a pick in the first or second round of this year’s draft, but with good depth at both cornerback and safety they will likely target both positions in the middle rounds of the draft.

Detroit Lions

Believe it or not there appears to be a reason to be optimistic about the future of the Detroit Lions. Sure this team has won just two games over the past two seasons, but you can’t overlook the massive improvements within the organization after the firing of former president / general manager Matt Millen. The new regime including head coach Jim Schwartz and general manager Martin Mayhew have brought some good young talent into the organization in just one year. Detriot is being aggressive as proved by early off-season additions, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, defensive tackle Corey Williams and wide receiver Nate Burleson.

Team Strengths:

- Calvin Johnson (He has the physical tools to be one of the best wide receivers in the game. The addition of Nate Burleson as a legit No. 2 receiver should help keep teams from constantly double teaming Megatron)
- Young Defensive Players (Safety Louis Delmas, linebacker DeAndre Levy and defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill proved to be solid additions to the defense from the 2009 NFL Draft)
- Matthew Stafford (He threw way too many picks in his rookie season and made a lot of mistakes; however, he showed guts and leadership as a rookie. It looks like the Lions may have found their franchise quarterback)

Team Needs:

1. Good, Physical Cover Cornerbacks – This team pretty much needs help across the board, but after releasing cornerback Phillip Buchanon this week they don’t have a single NFL caliber starting defensive back on their roster. This is one of many major holes they will look to fill this off-season.

2. Defensive Line – If not for signing free agent defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and trading for defensive tackle Corey Williams this past week this would have been their number one need. There was such a lack of talent at this position that there is a good chance they still use the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL draft to select either Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh or Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy. They are both highly touted defensive tackles whom paired with Vanden Bosch, Williams and Sammie Lee Hill could have the makings of a solid front four.

3. Offensive Line – Improving the offensive line has been a need for this team for years. They even lost Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders years ago because this organization’s lack of commitment to improving the offensive line. Left tackle Jeff Backus and center Dominic Raiola both had solid seasons, while second-year right tackle Gosder Cherilus was a huge disappointment. They desperately need to add talent to this line, the only position they seem to be set at is center. Look for the team to add a guard via the NFL Draft or free agency and don’t rule out the possibility of Detroit adding a big time left tackle and shift Backus to guard. Either way they need to improve offensive line.

Consisting of 10 members of the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Staff, along with guest columnist’s from Fighting Chance Fantasy and The IDP Guru, our first of many Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft was a 16-round affair based on a standard scoring league (Pass TDs – 4 points, All Other TDs – 6 points, 25 Yards Passing – 1 point, 10 Yards Rushing/Receiving – 1 point). Outside of having to field a starting line-up occupied by 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 D, owners were free to compile their rosters any way in which they pleased.

All commentary after each pick is provided by the Bruno Boys staff member who made that pick. The draft started on February 15, 2010 and we will report round-by-round updates as they are available. Make sure to check back for more commentary on our Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft.

FEBRUARY MOCK DRAFT ROUND 9 RESULTS

9.01: Bruno Boys Matt – Devin Hester (Chi) — This is purely a high upside play with Mike Martz arriving as OC in Chicago and Jay Cutler having one season under his belt as Bears QB. Lovie Smith thinks Hester has the skills to be a #1 WR and I think the upside is there to make this a value pick.

9.02: Bruno Boys Larry – Kenny Britt (Ten) — Britt had a solid, yet inconsistent rookie season with the Tennessee Titans. He finished the year with 43 receptions for 701 yards and three touchdowns. He seemed to be building a good rapport with Titans quarterback Vince Young in 2009, something I think the two will look to build on in 2010. He is a big and physical wide out who is hard to take down. I am very happy landing the second year receiver as my fourth receiver this late in the draft.

9.03: Bruno Boys Whooley – Devin Aromashodu (Chi) — Aromashodu is a perfect example as to why fantasy football owners need to pay attention through Week 17 no matter what because ultimately it only helps you for next year’s draft. Over the last four weeks of the 2009 season, Aromashodu averaged 12.75 fantasy points per contest as he quickly became a favorite target of Bears’ QB Jay Cutler. He also appears to be a favorite of Mike Martz, the Bears new offensive coordinator, and we all know what Martz can do for a receiver’s fantasy value. His upside makes him well worth a WR4 spot on my roster.

9.04: Bruno Boys Hallam – Terrell Owens (FA) — I was looking to finish out my wide receivers and there were a lot of guys who seemed to be average.  It might be weird to call a guy who is in his mid thirties someone with upside, but T.O. still has a chance to be good.  He is clearly out of Buffalo and has been linked to a number of different teams.  If he ends up landing somewhere like Cincinnati it could be an ideal situation for him, and for a third receiver I would have made a good pick.  Of course there is an equal chance that he can end up being a problem in the locker room, quit on his team, and be suspended or cut by October.  I’m sure that he still wants to show everyone that he still has it, so I’ll roll the dice.

9.05: Bruno Boys Jacob – Marion Barber (Dal) — I’m not sure if this ends up being a three-headed committee like in years past (with Felix Jones and Tashard Choice), or if Choice ends up moving to another team for 2010. I can see Barber’s role limited to the work inside the 20’s like Brandon Jacobs, but that may make Barber more valuable. He is still a talented runner when healthy, even though Jones has showed more than enough to make him the “starting” back in this offense. For my 4th RB, I’m happy with the value here.

9.06: Bruno Boys Jimbo – Santana Moss (Was) — I’d definitely leave this guy on my bench for most weeks, as he’s a pretty big boom-or-bust option these days, but really, what you want from WRs in these rounds are targets, and Santana Moss is still the top passing option on this team for now. He’s a worth a spot on my bench.

9.07: Bruno Boys Allie – Reggie Bush (NO) — Fairly or not, he’s been labeled overhyped, a draft bust and a guy who can’t run between tackles…yet there’s no denying that Bush is a threat rushing, receiving, and on special teams. He’s scored 32 touchdowns in four seasons despite missing 12 games due to injury. I chose him as my third RB and ninth round pick because I have confidence that Sean Payton will use Bush in ways that take advantage of his versatility, explosiveness, and ability to be difference-maker. I also hope Bush studies his performance from the divisional game against the Cardinals where he lowered his shoulders, knocked guys over and broke tackles—he’s got the tools – if he uses them consistently and stays healthy Bush has a chance to live up to all the expectations. At the very least, he’s a valuable goal-line option. 

9.08: Bruno Boys Cory – Joe Flacco (Bal) — Not that I needed a quarterback since I got Drew Brees and everything, but I wasn’t really feeling any of the players at tight end with this pick. Flacco is an up-and-coming player who will be a good backup for my squad should anything happen to Brees.

9.09: Bruno Boys Kyle – LaDainian Tomlinson (FA) — I realize that LT is no longer a Charger and will probably not be a starter any longer, but the man did score 12 times last season. He likely won’t get that many this season, but he’s still good for about eight or so scores and maybe 700 rushing/receiving yards, and I’ll certainly take that in the ninth round.

9.10: Bruno Boys IDP Guru – Steve Breaston (Ari) — I wanted to solidify my receiving core and I believe Breaston does that for me. I don’t think Anquan Boldin will be a Cardinal in 2010. With this being said, Breaston becomes the #2 WR in Arizona and should see a healthy increase in his 2009 production of 712 yards and 3 TDs.

9.11: Bruno Boys Greg – Marshawn Lynch (Buf) — This may be a risky pick, but aren’t they all at this point? Fred Jackson had a good year. But, Lynch will be going into his 4th year and has shown he has the potential to be a solid contributor that can be used in a variety of ways. If he can work hard and stay out of trouble, Lynch is a solid pick here this late in the draft.

9.12: Bruno Boys Cavigs – Ahmad Bradshaw (NYG) — With Ronnie Brown and Clinton Portis on my roster, I need a running back who is young and versatile and Bradshaw seems to be that guy. His 184 touches translated to 985 yards and seven touchdowns in 2009. Bradshaw will be just 24 next season, and he is a young running back who I feel is close to breaking out in a big way. Look for Bradshaw to start 2010 sharing the workload with Brandon Jacobs; however, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finished the season as the regular ball carrier in New York.

Round 9 Commentary from Bruno Boys Whooley: Some big names are still coming off the board here in Round 9, which tells me that the 2010 season will be an interesting one from a fantasy point of view. The RBBC and the heavy emphasis on the passing game, which has given fantasy value to teams’ No. 2 and No. 3 wide receivers, are to blame as both items have resulted in more players holding fantasy relevance.

As for the Round 9 picks here, chances are that both T.O. and LT go prior to Round 9 should they land in the right situations. As of now, despite their talents, that FA next to their name is a big detractor from their fantasy value.

Neither Reggie Bush, Marion Barber, nor Marshawn Lynch hold nearly the same value they held in years past, but all have showcased their talents before in the NFL and all could do so again should an injury or poor play by a teammate create even more playing time for these backs.

Bruno Boys Cory made a wise move in snagging Joe Flacco. I know he has Drew Brees, a man you play week in and week out, but Tom Brady was the same type of quarterback going into 2008, and we all know what happened there. Quarterback is a very important position in fantasy football, which is why I suggest you do as Cory did and grab a solid back-up whether you have a stud at the position or not.

Finally, in looking at the five wide receivers to go here in Round 9 not named T.O., I hate to say it, but I think the guys who grabbed the bigger names made the mistakes. The Devin Hester experiment at wide receiver hasn’t truly paid off yet, and with Martz envisioning Hester playing reduced snaps as the team’s slot receiver, I don’t see it paying off in 2010. As for Santana Moss, I just don’t like how inconsistent he is. At least the other three wide outs taken (Devin Aromashodu, Kenny Britt, and Steve Breaston) all are young, shown potential, and have room for improvement.

If there was ever a year to have a pick in the top 10 of the NFL Draft, it would be this year for the Green Bay Packers. While we are sure they wouldn’t trade in their near playoff victory experience, the draft is full of exactly what the Packers need in 2010: a stud offensive linemen ready to make an impact in the NFL.

Let’s be realistic with the Packers in 2010, their offense is loaded with talent. Starting with Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay scored the third most points in the NFL in 2009 (28.8 per game); although even more impressive is their +24 in turnovers. Leading the league by a ridiculous +9 (the Philadelphia Eagles were 2nd at +15). 

Despite those impressive statistics from 2009, a few others stand out just as much, if not more. The Packers were second in the NFL in penalty yards allowing over 1,000 yards for the season. Even less impressive was the Packers offensive line allowing the most sacks against in the NFL at 51 for the season (over 3 a game).

It’s not crazy to think that this offense can improve by leaps and bounds by bolstering their offensive line through the NFL Draft in 2010. Whether it is an offensive tackle or a guard, the Packers need one, and there are about six that fit that Round 1 billing.

The Green Bay Packers have the 23rd pick in the 2010 Draft, so while it may take them awhile to see who drops that low, early Mock Drafts have two offensive tackles available at that pick.

Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa: Bulaga is big at 6’6” and 311 pounds, and the fact that he was very good at left tackle in the Big 10 means a lot. In 2007, he played left guard, and in ’08-’09 he was an all Big 10 selection at left tackle. 

Obviously there is always a learning curve for offensive linemen moving to the NFL, and Bulaga will be no exception. But, he can instantly provide youth to this line that was so porous in 2009, and Rodgers will definitely approve of the pick (then again, any offensive line help he will probably approve of). Bulaga could definitely go before No.23, but it doesn’t look like he will drop past it. 

Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho: Iupati lacks the speed that will allow him to get to the second level; however, at 6’5” and 325 pounds it is understandable. He is undoubtedly the No.1 offensive guard prospect in this draft, and other than some durability issues, he will definitely be a Round 1 selection.

The Packers are probably in more desperate need of an offensive tackle (and Iupati is projected to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No.18), but Iupati can bring a mean streak to an unfortunately nice offensive line. As we mentioned, Green Bay was pretty gracious to opposing linemen and linebackers in 2009, just ask Jared Allen and Antwan Odom. 

Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland: Probably known as the best athlete of the five tackles expected to be taken in Round 1, his 40-yard dash at the combine should represent that (4.85). Teams expect Campbell to be a little raw, but hope that his sheer athleticism can overtake some of his shortcomings.

Campbell is definitely better in pass protection than run blocking, and if the last tackle left on the board, the Packers will gladly take the chance on him. Hopefully some of the inconsistencies that have plagued him throughout college are being solved and he can defend Rodgers blind side for many years to come. 

With Russell Okung, Trent Williams, and Anthony Davis all expected to go higher than No.23, though we have seen weird things happen at the NFL Draft, these three remaining players are the best shot the Packers have at a top-flight, offensive lineman. Aaron Rodgers, Ryan Grant, and the receiving corps should benefit greatly from any improvement in the offensive line. In fact, it’s kind of scary to imagine how good Rodgers can be as a fantasy football quarterback if he doesn’t lead the NFL in sacks against.

Consisting of 10 members of the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Staff, along with guest columnist’s from Fighting Chance Fantasy and The IDP Guru, our first of many Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft was a 16-round affair based on a standard scoring league (Pass TDs – 4 points, All Other TDs – 6 points, 25 Yards Passing – 1 point, 10 Yards Rushing/Receiving – 1 point). Outside of having to field a starting line-up occupied by 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 D, owners were free to compile their rosters any way in which they pleased.

All commentary after each pick is provided by the Bruno Boys staff member who made that pick. The draft started on February 15, 2010 and we will report round-by-round updates as they are available. Make sure to check back for more commentary on our Fantasy Football 2010 Mock Draft.

FEBRUARY MOCK DRAFT ROUND 9 RESULTS

9.01: Bruno Boys Matt – Devin Hester (Chi) — This is purely a high upside play with Mike Martz arriving as OC in Chicago and Jay Cutler having one season under his belt as Bears QB. Lovie Smith thinks Hester has the skills to be a #1 WR and I think the upside is there to make this a value pick.

9.02: Bruno Boys Larry – Kenny Britt (Ten) — Britt had a solid, yet inconsistent rookie season with the Tennessee Titans. He finished the year with 43 receptions for 701 yards and three touchdowns. He seemed to be building a good rapport with Titans quarterback Vince Young in 2009, something I think the two will look to build on in 2010. He is a big and physical wide out who is hard to take down. I am very happy landing the second year receiver as my fourth receiver this late in the draft.

9.03: Bruno Boys Whooley – Devin Aromashodu (Chi) — Aromashodu is a perfect example as to why fantasy football owners need to pay attention through Week 17 no matter what because ultimately it only helps you for next year’s draft. Over the last four weeks of the 2009 season, Aromashodu averaged 12.75 fantasy points per contest as he quickly became a favorite target of Bears’ QB Jay Cutler. He also appears to be a favorite of Mike Martz, the Bears new offensive coordinator, and we all know what Martz can do for a receiver’s fantasy value. His upside makes him well worth a WR4 spot on my roster.

9.04: Bruno Boys Hallam – Terrell Owens (FA) — I was looking to finish out my wide receivers and there were a lot of guys who seemed to be average.  It might be weird to call a guy who is in his mid thirties someone with upside, but T.O. still has a chance to be good.  He is clearly out of Buffalo and has been linked to a number of different teams.  If he ends up landing somewhere like Cincinnati it could be an ideal situation for him, and for a third receiver I would have made a good pick.  Of course there is an equal chance that he can end up being a problem in the locker room, quit on his team, and be suspended or cut by October.  I’m sure that he still wants to show everyone that he still has it, so I’ll roll the dice.

9.05: Bruno Boys Jacob – Marion Barber (Dal) — I’m not sure if this ends up being a three-headed committee like in years past (with Felix Jones and Tashard Choice), or if Choice ends up moving to another team for 2010. I can see Barber’s role limited to the work inside the 20’s like Brandon Jacobs, but that may make Barber more valuable. He is still a talented runner when healthy, even though Jones has showed more than enough to make him the “starting” back in this offense. For my 4th RB, I’m happy with the value here.

9.06: Bruno Boys Jimbo – Santana Moss (Was) — I’d definitely leave this guy on my bench for most weeks, as he’s a pretty big boom-or-bust option these days, but really, what you want from WRs in these rounds are targets, and Santana Moss is still the top passing option on this team for now. He’s a worth a spot on my bench.

9.07: Bruno Boys Allie – Reggie Bush (NO) — Fairly or not, he’s been labeled overhyped, a draft bust and a guy who can’t run between tackles…yet there’s no denying that Bush is a threat rushing, receiving, and on special teams. He’s scored 32 touchdowns in four seasons despite missing 12 games due to injury. I chose him as my third RB and ninth round pick because I have confidence that Sean Payton will use Bush in ways that take advantage of his versatility, explosiveness, and ability to be difference-maker. I also hope Bush studies his performance from the divisional game against the Cardinals where he lowered his shoulders, knocked guys over and broke tackles—he’s got the tools – if he uses them consistently and stays healthy Bush has a chance to live up to all the expectations. At the very least, he’s a valuable goal-line option. 

9.08: Bruno Boys Cory – Joe Flacco (Bal) — Not that I needed a quarterback since I got Drew Brees and everything, but I wasn’t really feeling any of the players at tight end with this pick. Flacco is an up-and-coming player who will be a good backup for my squad should anything happen to Brees.

9.09: Bruno Boys Kyle – LaDainian Tomlinson (FA) — I realize that LT is no longer a Charger and will probably not be a starter any longer, but the man did score 12 times last season. He likely won’t get that many this season, but he’s still good for about eight or so scores and maybe 700 rushing/receiving yards, and I’ll certainly take that in the ninth round.

9.10: Bruno Boys IDP Guru – Steve Breaston (Ari) — I wanted to solidify my receiving core and I believe Breaston does that for me. I don’t think Anquan Boldin will be a Cardinal in 2010. With this being said, Breaston becomes the #2 WR in Arizona and should see a healthy increase in his 2009 production of 712 yards and 3 TDs.

9.11: Bruno Boys Greg – Marshawn Lynch (Buf) — This may be a risky pick, but aren’t they all at this point? Fred Jackson had a good year. But, Lynch will be going into his 4th year and has shown he has the potential to be a solid contributor that can be used in a variety of ways. If he can work hard and stay out of trouble, Lynch is a solid pick here this late in the draft.

9.12: Bruno Boys Cavigs – Ahmad Bradshaw (NYG) — With Ronnie Brown and Clinton Portis on my roster, I need a running back who is young and versatile and Bradshaw seems to be that guy. His 184 touches translated to 985 yards and seven touchdowns in 2009. Bradshaw will be just 24 next season, and he is a young running back who I feel is close to breaking out in a big way. Look for Bradshaw to start 2010 sharing the workload with Brandon Jacobs; however, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finished the season as the regular ball carrier in New York.

Round 9 Commentary from Bruno Boys Whooley: Some big names are still coming off the board here in Round 9, which tells me that the 2010 season will be an interesting one from a fantasy point of view. The RBBC and the heavy emphasis on the passing game, which has given fantasy value to teams’ No. 2 and No. 3 wide receivers, are to blame as both items have resulted in more players holding fantasy relevance.

As for the Round 9 picks here, chances are that both T.O. and LT go prior to Round 9 should they land in the right situations. As of now, despite their talents, that FA next to their name is a big detractor from their fantasy value.

Neither Reggie Bush, Marion Barber, nor Marshawn Lynch hold nearly the same value they held in years past, but all have showcased their talents before in the NFL and all could do so again should an injury or poor play by a teammate create even more playing time for these backs.

Bruno Boys Cory made a wise move in snagging Joe Flacco. I know he has Drew Brees, a man you play week in and week out, but Tom Brady was the same type of quarterback going into 2008, and we all know what happened there. Quarterback is a very important position in fantasy football, which is why I suggest you do as Cory did and grab a solid back-up whether you have a stud at the position or not.

Finally, in looking at the five wide receivers to go here in Round 9 not named T.O., I hate to say it, but I think the guys who grabbed the bigger names made the mistakes. The Devin Hester experiment at wide receiver hasn’t truly paid off yet, and with Martz envisioning Hester playing reduced snaps as the team’s slot receiver, I don’t see it paying off in 2010. As for Santana Moss, I just don’t like how inconsistent he is. At least the other three wide outs taken (Devin Aromashodu, Kenny Britt, and Steve Breaston) all are young, shown potential, and have room for improvement.

Each NFL season can only have one champion, and in 2009, the New Orleans Saints claimed that title. The good news, though, is that right now for the 2010 season, every team is sitting even. With that in mind, the Bruno Boys got to thinking about what each NFL team needs to do in order to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next year. Thus, was born the Bruno Boys latest series which will examine the key needs that need to be addressed by all 32 NFL teams. Bruno Boys Whooley gets things started in this 8-part series with a look at the NFC West.

NFC WEST

Many people, myself included, claim that “the west coast is the best coast.” And, for as true as that sentiment may be in most aspects of life, with regards to football prowess of late, it just doesn’t hold. Sure, the Arizona Cardinals represented the NFC in the Super Bowl just two seasons ago, but to find the last time that two teams from the NFC West journeyed to the playoffs in the same year, you have to go all the way back to 2004 when both the Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams secured playoff births. Will the division break the five-year streak and finally send two teams to post-season play in 2010? Well, to do so, some work definitely needs to be done.

Arizona Cardinals

Despite nabbing their second consecutive division title in 2009, the Arizona Cardinals find themselves in a precarious situation going into 2010. There is no doubt that much of the Cardinals’ recent success had to do with quarterback Kurt Warner’s rebirth in the desert. Over the past two years, the QB amassed 8,336 passing yards and 56 passing TDs, while throwing just 28 INTs, leading a deadly aerial assault for Arizona. Sadly for the Cardinals, Warner won’t be adding to those numbers in 2010, as the veteran QB has decided to hang up the pads, and unlike, Brett Favre, we believe Warner will stick with that decision.

Warner’s departure means that Matt Leinart will more than likely be the man under center for Arizona, meaning the team can’t simply sit back and rely on their aerial attack to get them “Ws.” So, how do the Cardinals continue their winning ways?

Team Strengths:

- Dynamic Wide Receivers (Even if the team trades Anquan Boldin away, Larry Fitzgerald should find plenty of help on the outside in the forms of Steve Breaston and Early Doucet)
- Ground Game on the Rise (Beanie Wells showed bursts of the back he could be during his rookie season, while Tim Hightower proved to be a strong receiver out of the backfield)
- Bend Don’t Break Defense (The Cardinals’ gave up yards in 2009, but thanks to top-10 finishes in both sacks and interceptions, the team gave up just 20.3 points per game)

Team Needs:

1. A Veteran Quarterback – The Cardinals’ brass is saying all the right things about Leinart being their starting QB, but, really, what choice do they have? In reality, Leinart has been a bust during his NFL career, more famous for his partying than his play. Unless he can experience a reversal like Alex Smith and Vince Young did last season, the team won’t be making it to the playoffs for the third straight year. As a contingency plan, the team needs to sign a veteran QB, and it appears they’re thinking the same thing as there have been rumors flying around that the team is pursuing former New York Jet and Miami Dolphin quarterback, Chad Pennington.

2. Run Blocking – Over the past two seasons, the Cardinals have thrown the ball 1,224 times, while their rush attempts total just 705. Obviously, the switch from Warner to Leinart will cause those numbers to even out a bit this upcoming season. With a heavier emphasis on the run, the offensive line will need to adjust. Not only does that mean the Cardinals should be on the look out for a run blocking O-linemen this off-season, it also means O-line coach, Russ Grimm will need to use the off-season as a time to rework his run blocking schemes and retrain his linemen to push off the line rather than retreat into a pass block position.

3. Tight End Production – The wide receiver position hasn’t been a problem for the Cardinals for years. Meanwhile, the backfield seems to now be taken care of with the duo of Wells and Hightower ready to carry the load. So, what’s left? How about the tight end slot? The position yielded just 245 yards and 3 TDs in 2009. In 2010, that’s not going to cut it. Leinart can’t throw the deep ball as well as Warner did, which means he’s going to need to look to the tight end more often. It would behoove the team to pick up a reliable target to act as Leinart’s safety valve.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers drafted Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in 2005, hoping they had snagged their quarterback of the future. Early on, it seemed things couldn’t be further from the truth. Suffering through a bevy of injuries and offensive coordinators, Smith’s name was synonymous with bust. Now, though, following a 2009 season in which he played in 11 games, throwing for 2,350 yards, 18 TDs, and 12 INTs, hope has been renewed. And, that hope for Smith is one of the reasons, the 49ers believe they can improve on their 8-8 finish from 2009.

Team Strengths:

- Frank Gore (Four straight seasons of at least 1,400 total yards and 6 TDs – nothing to complain about there)
- Patrick Willis (Perhaps the best linebacker in the NFL, Willis has earned All Pro honors all three years he’s been in the league)
- Young Pass Catchers Showing Promise – (Vernon Davis tied the record for TDs by a tight end with 13 in 2009, Michael Crabtree notched 625 yards in just 11 games despite a lengthy hold out, and Josh Morgan is developing into a solid No. 2 wide out)

Team Needs:

1. Return Man – To be a top contender in the NFL, you need to be a complete team, which means offense, defense, and special teams. And, if I had to describe the Niners’ return game in one word for 2009, I’d go with horrendous, and that may be being kind. Ranking 21st in average yards per kick return and dead last in average yards per punt return, the Niners’ did not score one return TD in 2009, while fumbling the ball away 10 times. To get on top the NFC West, that’s going to need to change.

2. Sack Stopper – If the 49ers want to see Alex Smith’s development continue, they’ll need to offer him better protection than what the O-line provided in 2009. Allowing 40 sacks last season, the Niners gave up the 11th most sacks in the NFL. All that talent in the passing game means little if Smith doesn’t have the time needed to hook up with Davis or Crabtree.

3. Pass Rusher – The stats may make you think otherwise with the 49ers tallying 44 sacks on the defensive side of the ball in 2009, but any 49er fan will tell you, the Niners need to get more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. If they weren’t putting the other QB on their back, it was almost a guaranteed completion, a large reason that the 49ers ranked 21st in passing yards allowed. The Niners did well in bringing Justin Smith aboard prior to the 2008 season, but it’s now time to add another piece to the puzzle.

Seattle Seahawks

Jim Mora was picked to be the heir apparent to Mike Holmgren, taking over the reins of the Seattle Seahawks prior to the 2009 season. The good news is that Mora won one more game than Holmgren did in his last season with the team. The bad news is that still left the Seahawks with just a 5-11 record. Sensing that a true change was needed, the Seahawks brass let Mora go following the season, bringing in former USC head coach, Pete Carroll, who’ll look to get this team back on track.

Team Strengths:

- John Carlson (The sophomore tight end started off 2009 strong with a two-score game, but then disappeared until a four-game TD streak to end the year. The Seahawks will need him to build off that momentum for 2010)
- Justin Forsett (Part of the reason Mora was sent packing may have to do with the fact that he remained loyal to Julius Jones rather than give Forsett a true shot at showing what he could do. Forsett may not be an every down back, but the dual threat is a playmaker that the Carroll should look to utilize)
-Olindo Mare (Sure, he didn’t get a whole lot of attempts, but he capitalized on what did come his way, hitting on 92% of his field goal tries)

Team Needs:

1. Help for Housh – The Seattle Seahawks made a huge investment in wide receiver, TJ Houshmandzadeh, last off-season, giving the wide receiver a 5-year, $40 million deal. The return was not what they had hoped for as Housh tallied 911 yards and 3 TDs. Sure, the numbers were similar to his 2008 totals for Cincy (904 yards, 4 TDs), but the Seahawks were hoping for the 1,000 yard wide out that showed himself in 2006 and 2007. If that’s what the Seahawks want, though, they’ll need to find a wide out that can stretch the field much like Chad Ochocinco did when he and Housh played together, especially with Nate Burleson exploring free agency. A deep threat would open things up underneath for Housh, allowing him to take advantage of his size.

2. Alternative to Hasselbeck – Hasselbeck may be a smart guy and a coach’s dream. In fact, he’s already working with new offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates to learn the team’s offense. But, truth be told, the guy’s fragile, playing in just 20 of 32 games the last two years, and he’s not getting any younger. The Seahawks have two first round selections in the top-15, and as Bruno Boys Jacob pointed out in a recent article, they’d be wise to use one of those picks on a young QB that could study under Hasselbeck’s tutelage.

3. Ball Hawks – If you want to win games in the NFL, you need to win the turnover battle. That’s a tough task when your defensive unit only forces 23 turnovers (13 INTs, 10 Fumble Recoveries) on the year. The Seahawks need guys that will attack the ball and make things happen on the defensive side of things because sometimes a good defense can be the best offense.

St. Louis Rams

Steve Spagnuolo’s debut season as an NFL head coach may be one he wishes he could forget. Finishing 1-15 on the year, the Rams gave their faithful little to cheer about in 2009. And, I mean, very little. St. Louis averaged just 10.9 points per game last year, good for dead last in the league. In fact, the only thing Rams’ fans could be thankful about from 2009 is that the NFL powers put the Detroit Lions on their schedule. If not, they could have very well joined the Lions in that distinct 0-16 club.

Team Strengths:

- Steven Jackson (Over and over during the 2009 season, we emphasized the fact that Steven Jackson was the Rams’ offense, and we weren’t kidding. With 1,738 total yards, SJax accounted for 39% of the Rams’ total offense)
- Edward Jones Dome (At least by playing in a dome, the Rams spared their fans the injustice of having to watch a 1-15 team in the snow)

Team Needs:

1. Everything – The Rams’ needs are plenty (running back excluded), and if I laid them all out for you here, you’d be here till the start of the NFL season going down the list. The key though to the Ram’s off-season will be using that No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft wisely. I’m not sure if that means going with Ndamukong Suh or grabbing a QB, as it’s a tough situation to be in. But, no matter what they do, they need to hope it works out well. Selecting a bust will not only hurt for 2010, but for years to come.

Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho: Iupati lacks the speed that will allow him to get to the second level; however, at 6’5” and 325 pounds it is understandable. He is undoubtedly the No.1 offensive guard prospect in this draft, and other than some durability issues, he will definitely be a Round 1 selection.

The Packers are probably in more desperate need of an offensive tackle (and Iupati is projected to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No.18), but Iupati can bring a mean streak to an unfortunately nice offensive line. As we mentioned, Green Bay was pretty gracious to opposing linemen and linebackers in 2009, just ask Jared Allen and Antwan Odom. 

Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland: Probably known as the best athlete of the five tackles expected to be taken in Round 1, his 40-yard dash at the combine should represent that (4.85). Teams expect Campbell to be a little raw, but hope that his sheer athleticism can overtake some of his shortcomings.

Campbell is definitely better in pass protection than run blocking, and if the last tackle left on the board, the Packers will gladly take the chance on him. Hopefully some of the inconsistencies that have plagued him throughout college are being solved and he can defend Rodgers blind side for many years to come. 

With Russell Okung, Trent Williams, and Anthony Davis all expected to go higher than No.23, though we have seen weird things happen at the NFL Draft, these three remaining players are the best shot the Packers have at a top-flight, offensive lineman. Aaron Rodgers, Ryan Grant, and the receiving corps should benefit greatly from any improvement in the offensive line. In fact, it’s kind of scary to imagine how good Rodgers can be as a fantasy football quarterback if he doesn’t lead the NFL in sacks against.

Each NFL season can only have one champion, and in 2009, the New Orleans Saints claimed that title. The good news, though, is that right now for the 2010 season, every team is sitting even. With that in mind, the Bruno Boys got to thinking about what each NFL team needs to do in order to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next year. Thus, was born the Bruno Boys latest series which will examine the key needs that need to be addressed by all 32 NFL teams. Bruno Boys Whooley gets things started in this 8-part series with a look at the NFC West.

NFC WEST

Many people, myself included, claim that “the west coast is the best coast.” And, for as true as that sentiment may be in most aspects of life, with regards to football prowess of late, it just doesn’t hold. Sure, the Arizona Cardinals represented the NFC in the Super Bowl just two seasons ago, but to find the last time that two teams from the NFC West journeyed to the playoffs in the same year, you have to go all the way back to 2004 when both the Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams secured playoff births. Will the division break the five-year streak and finally send two teams to post-season play in 2010? Well, to do so, some work definitely needs to be done.

Arizona Cardinals

Despite nabbing their second consecutive division title in 2009, the Arizona Cardinals find themselves in a precarious situation going into 2010. There is no doubt that much of the Cardinals’ recent success had to do with quarterback Kurt Warner’s rebirth in the desert. Over the past two years, the QB amassed 8,336 passing yards and 56 passing TDs, while throwing just 28 INTs, leading a deadly aerial assault for Arizona. Sadly for the Cardinals, Warner won’t be adding to those numbers in 2010, as the veteran QB has decided to hang up the pads, and unlike, Brett Favre, we believe Warner will stick with that decision.

Warner’s departure means that Matt Leinart will more than likely be the man under center for Arizona, meaning the team can’t simply sit back and rely on their aerial attack to get them “Ws.” So, how do the Cardinals continue their winning ways?

Team Strengths:

- Dynamic Wide Receivers (Even if the team trades Anquan Boldin away, Larry Fitzgerald should find plenty of help on the outside in the forms of Steve Breaston and Early Doucet)
- Ground Game on the Rise (Beanie Wells showed bursts of the back he could be during his rookie season, while Tim Hightower proved to be a strong receiver out of the backfield)
- Bend Don’t Break Defense (The Cardinals’ gave up yards in 2009, but thanks to top-10 finishes in both sacks and interceptions, the team gave up just 20.3 points per game)

Team Needs:

1. A Veteran Quarterback – The Cardinals’ brass is saying all the right things about Leinart being their starting QB, but, really, what choice do they have? In reality, Leinart has been a bust during his NFL career, more famous for his partying than his play. Unless he can experience a reversal like Alex Smith and Vince Young did last season, the team won’t be making it to the playoffs for the third straight year. As a contingency plan, the team needs to sign a veteran QB, and it appears they’re thinking the same thing as there have been rumors flying around that the team is pursuing former New York Jet and Miami Dolphin quarterback, Chad Pennington.

2. Run Blocking – Over the past two seasons, the Cardinals have thrown the ball 1,224 times, while their rush attempts total just 705. Obviously, the switch from Warner to Leinart will cause those numbers to even out a bit this upcoming season. With a heavier emphasis on the run, the offensive line will need to adjust. Not only does that mean the Cardinals should be on the look out for a run blocking O-linemen this off-season, it also means O-line coach, Russ Grimm will need to use the off-season as a time to rework his run blocking schemes and retrain his linemen to push off the line rather than retreat into a pass block position.

3. Tight End Production – The wide receiver position hasn’t been a problem for the Cardinals for years. Meanwhile, the backfield seems to now be taken care of with the duo of Wells and Hightower ready to carry the load. So, what’s left? How about the tight end slot? The position yielded just 245 yards and 3 TDs in 2009. In 2010, that’s not going to cut it. Leinart can’t throw the deep ball as well as Warner did, which means he’s going to need to look to the tight end more often. It would behoove the team to pick up a reliable target to act as Leinart’s safety valve.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers drafted Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in 2005, hoping they had snagged their quarterback of the future. Early on, it seemed things couldn’t be further from the truth. Suffering through a bevy of injuries and offensive coordinators, Smith’s name was synonymous with bust. Now, though, following a 2009 season in which he played in 11 games, throwing for 2,350 yards, 18 TDs, and 12 INTs, hope has been renewed. And, that hope for Smith is one of the reasons, the 49ers believe they can improve on their 8-8 finish from 2009.

Team Strengths:

- Frank Gore (Four straight seasons of at least 1,400 total yards and 6 TDs – nothing to complain about there)
- Patrick Willis (Perhaps the best linebacker in the NFL, Willis has earned All Pro honors all three years he’s been in the league)
- Young Pass Catchers Showing Promise – (Vernon Davis tied the record for TDs by a tight end with 13 in 2009, Michael Crabtree notched 625 yards in just 11 games despite a lengthy hold out, and Josh Morgan is developing into a solid No. 2 wide out)

Team Needs:

1. Return Man – To be a top contender in the NFL, you need to be a complete team, which means offense, defense, and special teams. And, if I had to describe the Niners’ return game in one word for 2009, I’d go with horrendous, and that may be being kind. Ranking 21st in average yards per kick return and dead last in average yards per punt return, the Niners’ did not score one return TD in 2009, while fumbling the ball away 10 times. To get on top the NFC West, that’s going to need to change.

2. Sack Stopper – If the 49ers want to see Alex Smith’s development continue, they’ll need to offer him better protection than what the O-line provided in 2009. Allowing 40 sacks last season, the Niners gave up the 11th most sacks in the NFL. All that talent in the passing game means little if Smith doesn’t have the time needed to hook up with Davis or Crabtree.

3. Pass Rusher – The stats may make you think otherwise with the 49ers tallying 44 sacks on the defensive side of the ball in 2009, but any 49er fan will tell you, the Niners need to get more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. If they weren’t putting the other QB on their back, it was almost a guaranteed completion, a large reason that the 49ers ranked 21st in passing yards allowed. The Niners did well in bringing Justin Smith aboard prior to the 2008 season, but it’s now time to add another piece to the puzzle.

Seattle Seahawks

Jim Mora was picked to be the heir apparent to Mike Holmgren, taking over the reins of the Seattle Seahawks prior to the 2009 season. The good news is that Mora won one more game than Holmgren did in his last season with the team. The bad news is that still left the Seahawks with just a 5-11 record. Sensing that a true change was needed, the Seahawks brass let Mora go following the season, bringing in former USC head coach, Pete Carroll, who’ll look to get this team back on track.

Team Strengths:

- John Carlson (The sophomore tight end started off 2009 strong with a two-score game, but then disappeared until a four-game TD streak to end the year. The Seahawks will need him to build off that momentum for 2010)
- Justin Forsett (Part of the reason Mora was sent packing may have to do with the fact that he remained loyal to Julius Jones rather than give Forsett a true shot at showing what he could do. Forsett may not be an every down back, but the dual threat is a playmaker that the Carroll should look to utilize)
-Olindo Mare (Sure, he didn’t get a whole lot of attempts, but he capitalized on what did come his way, hitting on 92% of his field goal tries)

Team Needs:

1. Help for Housh – The Seattle Seahawks made a huge investment in wide receiver, TJ Houshmandzadeh, last off-season, giving the wide receiver a 5-year, $40 million deal. The return was not what they had hoped for as Housh tallied 911 yards and 3 TDs. Sure, the numbers were similar to his 2008 totals for Cincy (904 yards, 4 TDs), but the Seahawks were hoping for the 1,000 yard wide out that showed himself in 2006 and 2007. If that’s what the Seahawks want, though, they’ll need to find a wide out that can stretch the field much like Chad Ochocinco did when he and Housh played together, especially with Nate Burleson exploring free agency. A deep threat would open things up underneath for Housh, allowing him to take advantage of his size.

2. Alternative to Hasselbeck – Hasselbeck may be a smart guy and a coach’s dream. In fact, he’s already working with new offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates to learn the team’s offense. But, truth be told, the guy’s fragile, playing in just 20 of 32 games the last two years, and he’s not getting any younger. The Seahawks have two first round selections in the top-15, and as Bruno Boys Jacob pointed out in a recent article, they’d be wise to use one of those picks on a young QB that could study under Hasselbeck’s tutelage.

3. Ball Hawks – If you want to win games in the NFL, you need to win the turnover battle. That’s a tough task when your defensive unit only forces 23 turnovers (13 INTs, 10 Fumble Recoveries) on the year. The Seahawks need guys that will attack the ball and make things happen on the defensive side of things because sometimes a good defense can be the best offense.

St. Louis Rams

Steve Spagnuolo’s debut season as an NFL head coach may be one he wishes he could forget. Finishing 1-15 on the year, the Rams gave their faithful little to cheer about in 2009. And, I mean, very little. St. Louis averaged just 10.9 points per game last year, good for dead last in the league. In fact, the only thing Rams’ fans could be thankful about from 2009 is that the NFL powers put the Detroit Lions on their schedule. If not, they could have very well joined the Lions in that distinct 0-16 club.

Team Strengths:

- Steven Jackson (Over and over during the 2009 season, we emphasized the fact that Steven Jackson was the Rams’ offense, and we weren’t kidding. With 1,738 total yards, SJax accounted for 39% of the Rams’ total offense)
- Edward Jones Dome (At least by playing in a dome, the Rams spared their fans the injustice of having to watch a 1-15 team in the snow)

Team Needs:

1. Everything – The Rams’ needs are plenty (running back excluded), and if I laid them all out for you here, you’d be here till the start of the NFL season going down the list. The key though to the Ram’s off-season will be using that No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft wisely. I’m not sure if that means going with Ndamukong Suh or grabbing a QB, as it’s a tough situation to be in. But, no matter what they do, they need to hope it works out well. Selecting a bust will not only hurt for 2010, but for years to come.

DALLAS — A lawsuit accuses an oil and gas company owned by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones of aiding an alleged $15 million fraud.

The suit filed Wednesday in federal court in Dallas does not name Jones. The defendants are Blue Star Oil and Gas and its exploration manager, Lonnie Williams.

The lawsuit stems from a 2008 federal case alleging fraud committed by a Louisiana businessman who works with Blue Star.

Blue Star attorney Retta Miller says the lawsuit lacks merit. Jones declined to comment.

Williams is infamous among football fans in Texas for his alleged role in “The Spy Game,” the 1976 Texas-Oklahoma clash. Before the game, Texas coach Darrell Royal accused Williams of spying for the Sooners by sneaking into a Longhorns practice.
